Marita Abner is the Second Bassoonist of the Kansas City Symphony, and the Principal Bassoonist of the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra. She was the Principal Bassoonist of the Kansas City Camerata during its seven seasons, and has served in that capacity in the Utah Festival Opera Orchestra and the Missouri Symphony Society Orchestra; she has performed also in the Kansas City Philharmonic and the Wichita Symphony. She is an active recitalist and chamber music player, and is a former president of the Midwest Double Reed Society. Her graduate studies were done at the Yale University School of music, where she was a student of Arthur Weisberg; she has also studied with Norman Herzberg, Leonard Hindell, Ferdinand DelNegro, and Homer Pence. Her undergraduate degree is from Swarthmore College. In addition to being the faculty bassoonist at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance since 1979, she has taught at the Louisiana State University School of Music and the Kinhaven Music School in Weston, Vermont. Abner is SBE’s newest guest faculty member.

ROGER SOREN, who appeared as a guest artist on bassoon and contrabassoon last season, returns as a regular member of the SBE faculty. Soren has been the Assistant Principal Bassoonist and Contrabassoonist and occasional saxophonist of the Louisville Orchestra since 1989, and has appeared as soloist 3 times with that ensemble. Roger has also performed as soloist with the Haddonfield(NJ) Symphony, the Brunswick(GA) Symphony and the Jewish Community Center Orchestra in Louisville. He has also been a member of the Indianapolis and Jacksonville Symphonies, and was the acting contrabassoonist with the Montreal Symphony under Charles Dutoit on their US tour in 1996.
