Fellowships, Awards, and Financial Assistance
The Graduate School awards fellowships to first-year students on a competitive basis. These fellowships cover full tuition and provide an annual stipend. Renewal of these awards is possible for a total of two years. To be considered for fellowships, students must submit completed applications no later than January 20. The fellowships involve responsibilities such as accompanying, research, and clerical and support services.
Description of Possible Fellowship Duties:
Accompanying
Duties include accompanying undergraduate students (instrumental and vocal) for weekly lessons and final juries. Duties also include practice time, rehearsal time, and performances, and may include accompanying for masters’ level choral conducting recitals.
Research
Duties include directed research in libraries, computer-assisted research, ordering books and scores through inter-library loan, proofreading manuscripts, entering data in data bases, etc.
Class/Ensemble Preparation
Duties include checking out books, helping organize syllabi, grading papers, marking orchestral parts, doing choral set-ups, and carrying out other duties associated with teaching. Masters’-level students are not allowed to teach, but they may be asked to assist professors in their class preparations.
Clerical
Duties include the use of word-processing and database software in conjunction with research projects and class or ensemble preparation.
Assignment of Fellowship Duties:
Students will be asked to rank fellowship assignments in order of preference. Taking this ranking into account, students will be assigned combinations of duties. Payment will be made on a bi-weekly basis, and hours will be kept on a time sheet.
